This is another personal project that I worked on over the course of the 2014 year. While under contract as a skin designer, I wanted to prove that I could do an original character design. However, since I this was a personal effort I didn't have any art direction, nor did I seek out feedback from my professional friends. Lesson learned.
One of the primary challenges of this concept was the fact that Smite as a game is very popular in China. There are certain cultural restrictions when designing for a Chinese audience. One of these is that the exposure of human bones is considered repulsive and irreverent. As the "White Bone Spirit" of Chinese lore, Bai Gu Jing could have been very offensive if depicted in her traditional form as a female skeleton. This led to a lot of design challenges that I had to creatively work around.
While I'm proud of the final result, I know I could still do much better in terms of the design itself. Still, I really pushed myself to make the best design I could, and I learned a lot from the project.
